Ivegard Sask
In these Modern Medieval times, I am known by the name of Ivegard Sask in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). Ivegard is a woman from 9th century Northern Europe, born in Hammaburg (Hamburg) in Saxony just south of Danemark.
In 845 AD, Hammaburg was razed and plundered and Ivegard was kidnapped from the cloister that was her home to be sold as a slave in Haithabu (Hedeby). Having knowledge of reading and writing, and being a hard worker, Ivegard managed to earn her freedom in only 7 years.
Ivegard adopted the Danish culture of her captors. She even married a young farmer and had 3 children. But he joined a crew to go a-viking and never returned. To support her children and herself, Ivegard became a Runecarver, creating monuments of the stones erected to honor the dead. She even journied to Dorestad, to carve a stone for the family she formerly served. There she met a Rus by the name of Ivan and settled for a while. But her roving heart lead her back to Saxony, where she settled again learning new forms of casting and carving, while working as a seamstress and word-smith.
